Self-Styled Happiness

What is happiness? Is it a state of mind or an illusion? Is it self-created or controlled by external factors?  Let us broadly divide happiness into two segments:
Self-Created
Here is a perfect example of self-created happiness. Lately I had been visiting the veterinary hospital to treat my ailing dog. On view were plenty of dogs showing love for their masters irrespective of how they looked or what they wore. I term this as unconditional love and all that the dog seeks in return is a kind word and a pat on the head. We have a lot to learn from our furry friends when it comes to happiness, loyalty and unconditional love.
External Factors
We are by nature very selective about who to befriend and who to love. There is an ulterior motive which controls our actions, and without hesitation we extend love and friendship to people who are affluent and influential even though they may be of questionable character. So this is conditional love, as we are expecting something in return.
Introspection
How many of us are capable of extending unconditional love? In other words love without expectations or reciprocation. This type of love will bring you immense satisfaction and unbelievable happiness.
We possess and display love of varying intensity. Initially we love our parents with all our heart and are willing to do anything for them. However over the years this love gets diluted when other people become part of our life. It’s now the turn of the life partner to hog the limelight, followed by the arrival of children. If all can live amicably together, then it would be a perfect world. However in reality that rarely happens. The parents become the first victim and are pushed into the background and in many cases are either abandoned or pushed into homes. Some shrewd affluent parents escape this scenario if they continue to control the finances or property, ensuring that due attention and love continues to come their way. What does this prove? Love has a give and take policy.
Conclusion
The reason for emphasizing on love is because it is part and parcel of happiness. There can be no happiness without love. Our ultimate goal is to achieve happiness. So to achieve complete happiness, extend unconditional love to all, irrespective of their relationship to you.
It is a well-known fact that we reap what we sow and with God’s blessings we can benefit tenfold. Isn’t that a good enough incentive for us?

Online Wedding!

Recently I attended the wedding of an associate’s daughter, while we were seated in the main hall awaiting the arrival of the couple, a germ of an idea took root.
Let me retrace my steps a bit to explain the reason this idea came to mind. A few days before the wedding, my wife and daughter categorically announced that they both needed new clothes, as the ones in their wardrobe had been worn earlier for a similar function.
This is one incomprehensible factor for any male, we repeat our clothes unabashedly for any type of function without a second thought. However this is not the case with the ladies, who apparently seem to have a stunning memory as to what each wore for a function, and therefore cannot be seen again in the same outfit. So I had to loosen my purse strings for two sets of clothes, including matching footwear.
If this was all to it then I was sadly mistaken. Next came the visit to the parlour for a hair set, pedicure, manicure, facial and what not. One would imagine that they were in direct competition with the bride. Since I was outnumbered, and to maintain peace, I meekly succumbed once again.
Came the day of the wedding, I was asked as to what gift I had planned to give the newlyweds and was cautioned to keep in mind our status and relationship with the bride, and had to cough up a substantial amount as a suitable gift.
Finally all was done, I had to patiently wait for a good two hours before the mother and daughter decided to make an appearance from their respective bedrooms all dressed up. We made it in time to the church and had to squeeze past a few in the pew before finding place. Thankfully the ceremony wasn’t too long, though we had to endure a sermon on purity of marriage highlighting the role of husband and wife. I looked around at the other invitees, almost all had a bored and impatient look, especially the men.
After the ceremony, there was a rush to congratulate the couple and click photos with them. This was again beyond my understanding, on most occasions we never got to see those pics, but still the craze for posing with the couple never seemed to diminish.
Now the next part was to reach the venue for the reception, a drive through snarling traffic, and then the arduous task of finding suitable and safe parking.
We reached the hall and then had to wait once again for the couple to arrive, which took a while. After their grand arrival, we were welcomed by an MC who laboriously went through the motions of introducing the couple and close relatives, followed by a few speeches which never seemed to end.
I tapped my feet impatiently and got a dig in the ribs from my wife. ‘How much longer?’ I whispered to her. I only got a glare in response and sunk lower into my chair. My mind wandered into oblivion, before I was brought back rather abruptly by another dig. Apparently the introduction ceremony was over, and all invitees had already queued up to wish the couple on stage and handover the gift.
It was a dreary, slow walk and after an eternity we reached the stage. We wished the couple and posed for a round of photographs. Finally all was done and then we proceeded to the dining hall for another long wait, before we got to eat.
While we were driving home, I noticed that almost half a day had been lost and there were still a few more weddings to attend during the course of the month. It was then the idea which had briefly come to my mind in the reception hall, was now a full-fledged concept. I drove home quickly, rushed to my study room and jotted down whatever came to mind. My proposal was simple, economical for the host as well as guests. An online marriage ceremony could be a path-breaking concept.
The actual marriage attended by immediate family members and very close friends is beamed live, a link is given in each wedding invitation, and at the appropriate time, guests can log on to view the ceremony. Option to pass comments, express feelings also given. You can even view it later, if unable to do so live. Bank account of the bride or bridegroom is given depending from which side you are invited, to send money as a gift, purely optional though.
Next, each guest who confirms, furnishes his address, and food is delivered directly to his residence by a caterer contracted by the host.
This eliminates wedding hall charges which are colossal. A guest can even sit in his pyjamas and witness the wedding, no driving in traffic, no new outfits and can work simultaneously too if necessary. He could use his smartphone in office to watch the proceedings and gets a delicious meal too.
This would result in phenomenal savings for both sides and a relieved father could divert that money for the child instead. As far as the couple is concerned, they will of course be relieved in not having to greet hundreds of people, an extremely tiring and stressful exercise.
Of course some will argue that marriages are an opportunity to meet and mingle, no dispute there, but if you are a close relative or friend you will be invited to make a personal appearance. My concept is basically for those who have to attend just for a formality.
Another plus is eliminating excess expenditure incurred on gate crashers. Has anyone cared to even ponder for a moment about those uninvited pests, which is so rampant in all marriage functions that we can even brand them as ‘Professional Gate-Crashers.’
When I showed my proposal to the wife, she read through with a look of horror on her face and throwing her hands in the air blurted, ‘If you show this to anyone, I will ……………….!’
I am still contemplating the risks involved in sharing my idea.

How to be a Power Reader

The terminology that ‘Knowledge is Power’ is now a customary one and also a popular phrase by motivational speakers. Maybe you are tired of hearing it, but let’s actually look at it objectively without pre-conceived notions.
What sets apart two individuals? One with limited capabilities and the other bubbling over. One with the power to mesmerize and the other to blabber and sap you. Knowledge is what separates the brilliant from the mediocre, the exquisite from the ordinary and the refined from the coarse.
Since we have now understood the significance of ‘Knowledge is Power’, lets discover the ways and means to acquire this leverage tool. Reading books is the primary source followed by collaborating and communicating with accomplished individuals who can be the architect in our quest to attain a similar status.
So, does this mean that reading any kind of book is beneficial?  Possibly a debatable statement.  In reality I would say that every book imparts knowledge.  Obviously some more than others, but it will be rather unfair to say that some books are worthless and don’t contribute.
The power of knowledge cannot be disputed and the more we read, the more we acquire. Some books leave a lasting effect on our minds and in our lives, inducing a further desire to read.
Another important aspect of reading is to absorb and retain what we read.  Sadly we don’t retain everything, unless it has impacted our mind.  How many of us remember everything we learned in school and college? Sadly almost all that we studied, is buried in some corner of our mind.
We allow our mind to filter and discard information based on assumptions that it will be of no use.  Incorrect is what I say, no knowledge deserves that treatment.
Reading helps us to develop and sharpen our cognitive abilities and the brain has the capacity to absorb lots of information. I once read about a theory mooted that we only use 2% of our brain capacity in one instance, and another stated that it is 10%. Though some renowned scientists claim that all this is a myth.
Many such theories are floated, but one thing I am absolutely sure about is that, when we are attempting to solve a complex problem, one side of our brain takes on the load to solve that particular task. Closely observe that, after numerous attempts, if you are unable to solve, the mind starts to feel fuzzy and overloaded. That is the indication for you to realise that the part of the brain being used is stressed out and needs rest. The easiest way out in such a scenario is to temporarily abandon that problem, and take up a completely opposite task. Immediately another part of the brain is activated, allowing the earlier part to rest and rejuvenate. After a while if you revert back to the original problem, lo and behold the solution will come to you easily.
I have a simple explanation to endorse this theory. Take a small package, not too heavy or too light either and hold it high above your head with one hand. After a certain period of time your hand will tire and feel the semi-light package as ten times heavy. So what do you do? You will transfer the package to the other hand and rest the tired one. After rest, the tired hand will be strong once again to hold up the package. The same goes for our brain too, we tend to use one side which tires and to switch sides we need to take up a diverse activity to allow the tired side to revitalize. I cannot explain or gauge the percentage of brain used in such cases, let the scientists decipher that.
Trust me I have practised this on numerous occasions and it has worked every time. Give it a shot if you have doubts.
Finally let’s make it a point to meet and interact with people who can captivate and fascinate us with their savoir faire. Their poise and sophistication will be a lifetime experience for mere mortals like us, and we can learn immensely from even a brief association.
